The North Fork of the Flathead is one of the wildest valleys in the lower 48. The woods are full of rare predators such as the wolverine, grizzly, cougar, lynx and wolf. These deep woods and wild mountains provide the perfect refuge. Golden and bald eagles dominate the sky.

It was a very pleasant fall day in Glacier National Park when I took this photo. I couldn’t see much wildlife, but I was able to hear a few bugling elk off in the distance.

The Act, sponsored by Representative Anna Eshoo (D-CA) and backed by the grassroots coalition, Save America’s Forests, is the latest attempt to change the US Forest Service from its former role as a handmaiden to the timber industry to a new role as caretakers of America’s public natural forest ecosystems. Among other things, the Act would prohibit clearcutting, preserve Ancient Forests and roadless lands, while mandating the agency protect and restore biodiversity.

Lawrence Lefebvre contacted wildlife officials after killing the bear near the upper east shore of Flathead Lake on Oct. 25. The state wildlife agency says Lefebvre was hunting black bear and mistakenly shot the grizzly, a protected species.

Other issues on the environmental wish list include significantly more wilderness area throughout the state, including a new proposal for 600,000 acres in the White River National Forest that’s been dubbed the Hidden Gems plan.

Carbondale-based Wilderness Workshop and the Natural Resources Defense Council have filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Denver, arguing that the two federal agencies charged with approving gas drilling in far-flung Hell’s Gulch failed to take into account the threat of worsening air quality as a result of more gas wells.

The plan, in effect since 1986, covers road and facility construction, land uses, vegetation management and trail construction. The public may comment on draft revisions of desired conditions in the forest, land use zones and wilderness areas.
