Arizona: Forest Service off road near Grand Canyon halted

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Check out the quote from the Center for Biological Diversity:

The plan would have allowed hunters to drive ORVs one mile from any road to retrieve downed elk – leaving virtually all lands open to off-road vehicle damage. In addition, the plan would have damaged the habitat of sensitive species such as the northern goshawk, American pronghorn, mountain lion, and black bear – species spanning both National Forest and National Park lands.

Yellowstone opens comment period on winter use (snowmobiling)

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

This again? Yup. And the results will be the same. The vast majority of Yellowstone National Park owners (IE the taxpayers of this country) don’t want sledding in the park. Why? Because a huge chunk of snowmobilers show an incredible lack of self awareness and ethics.

The comment period is open now and closes September 8th:

Report: Public lands see increase in ORV use

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

The GAO report indicates that there are far too many ORV’s and not enough enforcement and management. I think this mirrors the personal experiences of many outdoor enthusiasts.

The Blue Ribbon Coalition makes some comments in the article, so make sure you hold your nose while reading:

Great news, and a much needed break for one of our best national parks. Looks like this will be in place for at least two years.

Michigan: USFS targets big trucks in national forests

Looks like they are trying to clamp down on “big truck gatherings”, where groups of people pretty much demolish the landscape.

Michigan: Manistee National Forest working to eliminate illegal trails

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Some sobering stats for this forest:

the Manistee National Forest is not inaccessible in any way shape or form. He said 95 percent of the forest is within 1/4 mile of a road and 99 percent is within a half mile of a road.

This tends to be the case for most eastern national forests. Anyone who complains about “lack of access” is severely misinformed.

Wisconsin: Felony animal cruetly charges dropped because “suspect was hunting”

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

You guys may remember the case of the psycopaths herding, killing and then torturing deer in Wisconsin. We talked about this before at this link and at this link.

It turns out an either drunken or insane judge has dismissed felony animal cruelty charges against Robby Kuenzi because Wisconsin law indicates that those hunting deer during season cannot be charged with animal cruelty.

You heard that right. Here’s a quote from the officer on the scene:

One, after it was on the ground, looked like snowmobilers parked on top of it and just gunned the snowmobile and tore the stomach right open of the deer,” Yorkson said. Another deer was dragged to a tree while alive an eventually choked itself to death.

This ruling may not affect the other two defendants because they are going up with other judges.

Insanity, and a real black eye on this county, straight form the heart of the Wisconsin judicial system.

Give the Waupaca Chamber of Commerce a call and voice your displeasure on this incredibly ridiculous ruling:
