Wisconsin eagles being poisoned by led bullets/shot

Written by Mike on March 5th, 2010

Some sad news. As more and more people enter the woods and use lead shot, more and more bald eagles are getting maimed and killed by their use. I and others plead with you out there to switch to lead-free bullets NOW. Please continue to enjoy your past time, but in a way that does not cause great suffering at the cost of central nervous system damage to animals such as bald eagles.
The eagle in the video below may never be put back into the wild thanks to central nervous system damage caused by lead poisoning.

Think people. Think.

OK, I’m thinking, and I’ll connect another lead source soon, I just need to dig for it..

Tetra-ethyl lead, abbreviated TEL, is an organometallic compound with the formula (CH3CH2)4Pb. Once a common antiknock additive in gasoline (petrol), TEL usage was largely discontinued because of the toxicity of lead and its deleterious effect on catalytic converters. It is still used as an additive in aviation fuel for piston engine-powered aircraft.

And guess what is also spewing out of the exhaust of all those super fact race cars, Indy racers, Nascar, Drag cars, Race boats, etc.etc. AVGAS.. So it is not just the lead shot..

Friends of the Earth has filed a petition with EPA, requesting that EPA find pursuant to section 231 of the Clean Air Act that lead emissions from general aviation aircraft cause or contribute to air pollution that may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare and that EPA propose emissions standards for lead from general aviation aircraft. Alternatively, Friends of the Earth requests that EPA commence a study and investigation of the health and environmental impacts of lead emissions from general aviation aircraft, if EPA believes that insufficient information exists to make such a finding. The petition submitted by Friends of the Earth explains their view that lead emissions from general aviation aircraft endanger the public health and welfare, creating a duty for the EPA to propose emission standards.

Using lead shot has been controversial for years. For a while it was hard to get lead shot–depending on the gun you used. For older guns–some people didn’t want steel shot for fear it would ruin their barrels. But for bird hunting you want a fairly consistent pattern and steel dosn’t have the density of lead so you will have to alter what size shot you use–depending on the game. Of course on a newly killed bird or rabbit it’s easy to find and remove the shot so it isn’t consumed. Unfortunately, with birds it’s easier for them to get winged and keep flying. Eagles also like to dine on carrion which could have died from toxic exposure. Thus, the food-chain continues.
