Oregon: Conservation groups threaten lawsuit over fisher

Written by Mike on February 5th, 2010

This is one of the coolest animals you will see in the forests, folks. I had the lucky opportunity to spot a couple of them in the Huron Mountains of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the 1990′s. I have not been able to get an image of one yet, and probably won’t.

The groups want the Pacific fisher listed as endangered, and rightly so.

Fisher are very common in the northern half of Wisconsin where they’ve made a remarkable recovery the past 40-50 years from their initial relocations from the Adirondacks. The first fisher sighting in my particular neck of the woods was in the early 1980s and by the late 1980s they were quite common and we see several every year now. Porcupine populations have taken quite a hit as a result… ;)

Thanks herb for the news! It is wonderful to hear of animals making a comeback from near extinction.
