Yellowstone takes up snowmobile issue again

Deja vu… Looks like more comments and possibly another study. I;m guessing same outcome but better enforcement due to a more friendly administration.

Idaho: Forest officials change plan for bighorn sheep

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

One of the plan alternatives supposedly reduces domestic sheep grazing by 60% in the Salmon River canyon and Hells Canyon. Domestic sheep and bighorn do not mix. Bighorn can easily catch pneumonia from them.

Wyoming: Bridger-Teton National Forest proposes to restrict drilling leases on Wyoming Range

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Good news! What I love about this story is that a wild cat which supposedly no longer roams the Wyoming Range had everything to do with getting rid of those leases.

Payback is a bitch from the ghost cat. You may know them as “lynx”.

BREAKING: Obama holds historic and unusual Q and A with House GOP

Friday, January 29th, 2010

This is one of the most amazing political setups I have ever witnesed. Initially no cameras were planned, but Obama let them in at the last minute. The GOP is now admitting “this was a mistake”. Obama takes them down point by point in what can only be described as a British style “Question Period” in the House of commons. Fox news actually cut their feed halfway through because of what Obama was doing to their GOP friends in the House….

Montanans for Trap-Free Public Lands

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Here we go, folks. These guys could really use your help in getting signatures to make the 2010 ballot which would trigger a vote on public land trapping in Montana’s(and the nation’s) public lands. This is a very important cause. Trapping is an antiquated and outdated “pastime” and needs to be gone. Trapping is not the “sportsman” way. We are no longer exploring unbroken, endless country needing these animals to survive as we map new territory. This country has moved on. So should trapping.

You can call for a petition sheet:

Montanans for Trap Free Public Lands

Montana sets the example for the rest of the nation with its vast and wild public land system. There’s no question that this trapping ban, when passed will be picked up by other states with large amounts of public land.

These guys need 25,000 signatures from registered Montana voters by June 18th. I aks any blog owners reading this to pass this story along. I also ask that readers here “Digg” this story (lower left icon here at the botton of the post) in order to gain awareness of this issue.

The Sound of Silence: Europe no longer has any of it, only a dozen places in the U.S.

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

This is shocking. It’s part of a new book by audio ecologist Gordon Hempton. In the interview, Hempton claims that the average noise free interval in a wilderness area during daytime has shrunk to five minutes. The main culprit here is air traffic.

Now that took some courage right there. Nice to see someone stick up for democracy.

Montana: Rock Creek bighorn herd hit by deadly pneumonia outbreak

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

This is very sad news. I was able to spend some time with the Rock Creek bighorn herd this fall in the Lolo National Forest. They looked healthy and vibrant in October, but one thing I saw set off a big, fat white flag – bighorns eating in the same area that domestic sheep were using a day earlier. These are not large domestic sheep ranches, just little operations. But I’m guessing it’s enough to infect the bighorns. Bighorn sheep and domestic sheep do not mix.

Wildlife officials are absolutely confounded by this outbreak in various sheep herds around the northwest. As climate change gets worse, I feel we will see more disease cropping up, both for us and for wildlife. When you combine that with the pathogens introduced to native wildlife by cattle and domestic sheep, you have a stewing brew of just plain bad.

Did this one live? I came across him this fall at Rock Creek. I hope he’s still out there on those cliffs.

Montana: Rheberg and Tester letters over wilderness proposal

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Interesting back and forth between two guys who have a great deal of power over one of the wildest states in the nation. Most interesting however are Matthew Khoeler’s comments in the reply section of thepage which present the fact that the committee in the Senate will not go for any kind of wilderness trigger or mandated logging.
