Tuesday, December 29th, 2009Prairie dog and wilderness, Badlands National Park
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009This cool little fella was stuffing his mouth in Badlands National Park, South Dakota. The prairie dog colony was just inside the border of the Badlands Wilderness, a 64,000 acre wilderness area that almost no one knows about. It’s a fascinating land of rolling hills and juniper with bison hidden behind little dips and old skeletal looking tree trunks . It’s quite a strange site when you can see remnants of the American prairie and then cacti popping up out of the ground. As I filmed the prairie dog colony, 40 mph wind gusts came from the west, cooling off the Badlands and giving the feeling of approaching winter. A couple large hawks circled the colony looking for meals. I was all alone, but the prairie dogs had each other, often calling out warning cries because of the circling hawks. I could see how well they communicated, a very close knit unit that did not hesitate to alert others to danger. If this was simply a survival trait rather than an animal caring for another animal, why wouldn’t the prairie dog just hide in its hole rather than alerting the others? I wondered about that, and still do.
People often think of wilderness as snow capped peaks, deep pine forests and rushing mountain rivers. Usually, that is the correct visual placement. However, there exist a few last places of wilderness that used to be – of wilderness that no one expects. The Badlands wilderness is one of those places. I spent the day hiking it, immersed in the beauty of the lost prairie. It felt like home.

Montana: Bull trout, goshawk and loggers benefit in Lolo National Forest timber sale settlement
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009The Lolo National Forest is beautiful coutnry. It’s often underlooked because of the other majestic forests in Montana, but it shouldn’t be. I would love to have that forest as my backyard. The folks in Missoula are lucky.
This settlement really got down to what was good for the wildlife, and you can trust that when the Alliance For the Wild Rockies says something is improved for wildife, they mean it. These people don’t mess around when it comes to that subject. The buffer zone increase for a known goshawk nest was especially interesting.
Minnesota: $1000 reward offered for information on wolf killings
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009Two wolves were killed in the Superior National Forest and Federal officials are seeking help in finding the culprits.
I find nothern Minnesota to be a beautiful but strange place. The decline of the moose population is a real warning into some of the changes that are happening up north. I feel the northwoods will be the most easily visible in terms of climate change impacts.
Colorado: Mountain lion attacks dog, sheriff has to come and put both animals down
Tuesday, December 29th, 2009Nature can be a cruel bitch. Not something you wish on anyone. A bad ending for the owner, the dog and the cougar.
Wisconsin: Cougar caught on film in western part of state
Monday, December 28th, 2009Looks like the DNR is continuing to track the animals too. I have to admit I’m really happy that these big cats apepar to be recolonizing the northwoods.

Northern Rockies Wolf death tally passes 500
Friday, December 25th, 2009Bad news for the wolves, of course. The good news is that the habitat is great and they will rebound if permitted. In speaking with other wildlife and wilderness advocates, the real crime seems to be that being committed by the pointless “wildlife services” which kills most of the wolves – some for simply taking out one stock animal. The funding for Wildlife Services needs to be yanked.
Montana: New snowmobile ruling by judge clashes with Tester logging/wilderness bill
Friday, December 25th, 2009Surprise! Well, there was some good news this week when Judge Molloy called for an end to 95 miles of grooming on Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest Trails.
Most of this area is in the West Pioneer WSA, a beautiful area still home to the wolverine. The bands news is that the Tester bill will remove most of the WSA and set aside only 25,000 acres for wilderness, while also overriding the judge’s decision.
