I used to trap as a kid and we used either a drowning set or a conibear. I don't trap or hunt anymore. I prefer to see animals alive--not dead, stuffed and hanging on a wall. The government outlawed DDT and other poisonious insecticides but it allows the use of explosive, poisonous devices to kill predators and other "nuisance animals". This is so stupid. All my family members are avid outdoor enthusiasts (including my 3 year old boy who camped with us in Denali when he was only one). We have hiked and camped in the Grand Canyon, upper and lower Appalacian, the Ozarks, Yellowstone, Glacier, etc., etc., and I can just image my kid stepping on or picking up one of these devices. This is parallel to landmining our national parks. You must admit this is such a dichotomy of values. You can't buy something to kill the bugs in your garden but you can buy things to stick in our national parks to kill people. But that was changed with our need for land, water, and other natural resources. Any policy or attitude that does not support a balanced sustenance of all ecosystems is flawed. One specific group cannot (and should not be allowed)to monopolize these resources. We must keep hunters, farmers, ranchers, landowners, native americans, outdoor enthusiasts, et. al, content with a long-term policy that preserves all of our resources and rights to enjoy and make a living from our land. This policy must be all encompassing (supported by both federal and state laws)and most of all, preserve our wildlife and natural resources for future generations to also enjoy. Our generation has been the greediest and most exploitive of these resources. Like the democrats and republicans, all we do is point fingers and blame each other. Well, look was it has got our country into and we continue to exploit and not preserve. Mankind is certainly a most pitiful lot. Isn't it time we start to be mature and agree on a sound management policy for our environment? I am an environmentalist and I side more with those people who want to preserve that exploit our resources. However, I am not totally against hunting, or cattle ranching, or cutting trees provided we do so using sound conservation practices. I am against aerial and motorized hunting of any wildlife. I am against massive killing and slaughering of any native species that we need to preserve. People need to stop thinking from only one or two perspectives.
