Idaho: Wildlife Services goes rogue, takes out wolf pack for no reason

Written by Mike on November 28th, 2009

Ralph Maughan has the contact information and the full story over at his excellent blog.

I’m guessing that this specific situation will be presented before Judge Molloy and the wolf will be relisted in short order. Time and time again, it’s these sort of thrill kill power seekers who end up doing the most damage to their own twisted cause.

The “rules” state that a chronic depradating pack kills 1 or more livestock per year. That is a death sentence in the first place. Irrational, unrealistic “regulation”. Idaho cannot manage their wolves.

  2. Blake says:

Really for “no reason”….They haven’t killed any livestock>>>?
I find that hard to believe…what are your sources>>?

  3. tiredofsecularprogressivism says:

“Not one wolf not one predator” this is the agenda to stop hunting and ranching so that wolf worshippers can have a government run feedlot of deer and elk. I say smoke a pack-a-day

  4. Mike says:

Gline – you are right on the money. It seems like an ithcy trigger finger and not much else.

  5. tiredofsecularprogressivism says:

Mike, wolves kill cows and what ever else is available + man kills wolves= balanced eco-system.

  6. Richie says:

I believe these cows are out their as bait for a wolves to kill, just to give fish and game an excuse to kill every wolf they can. This will get back east and to all parts of the country, then maybe something will be done,I do not want my tax dollars paying for this.

  7. Richie says:

I believe the heard are put out as bait for the wolves to kill, so fish and game has an excuse to kill entire packs.

  8. tiredofsecularprogressivism says:

Richie I dont want my hunting license fees to fund feeding your stupid wolves.

  9. gline says:

No Blake, at this point it was a mass kill on wolves for no reason. Are there any livestock in Sawtooth right now?

  10. gline says:

tiredofsecularprogressivism, I don’t want my tax dollars going towards killing PACKS of wolves for no reason- wolves get blamed all the time for being what they are. Humans are the largest predator.

  11. gline says:

Mike do you have any news on the predator derby in pocatello?

  12. Mike says:

gline – no more info as of yet, but information should start rolling itno my blog or Ralph’s early this week. In the meantime, take note of theother trash derby’s that will be held in the area:

    Pocatello………….Nov. 27th-28th
    Treasure Valley…..Dec. 11th-12th
    Twin Falls…………Jan. 8th-9th

  13. Jim K says:

Before settlers came to the area, there was a harmony amongst the humans (native americans) and wildlife. But that was changed with our need for land, water, and other natural resources. Any policy or attitude that does not support a balanced sustenance of all ecosystems is flawed. One specific group cannot (and should not be allowed)to monopolize these resources. We must keep hunters, farmers, ranchers, landowners, native americans, outdoor enthusiasts, et. al, content with a long-term policy that preserves all of our resources and rights to enjoy and make a living from our land. This policy must be all encompassing (supported by both federal and state laws)and most of all, preserve our wildlife and natural resources for future generations to also enjoy. Our generation has been the greediest and most exploitive of these resources. Like the democrats and republicans, all we do is point fingers and blame each other. Well, look was it has got our country into and we continue to exploit and not preserve. Mankind is certainly a most pitiful lot. Isn’t it time we start to be mature and agree on a sound management policy for our environment? I am an environmentalist and I side more with those people who want to preserve that exploit our resources. However, I am not totally against hunting, or cattle ranching, or cutting trees provided we do so using sound conservation practices. I am against aerial and motorized hunting of any wildlife. I am against massive killing and slaughering of any native species that we need to preserve. People need to stop thinking from only one or two perspectives. We need to compromise our attidues and work together.

  14. gline says:

The trash derby’s are not illegal because no protective law has made it through the legislature I take it. have groups tried in the past to make the trash derbys illegal in Idaho specifically?

  15. Mike says:

    G-line:

I do not know if groups have tried to ban the predator derbies before. I need to look into that.

  16. Mike says:

Jim – I agree with much of your post. It seems not much is getting done these days. We see eye to eye on a lot, but I think some of the more obvious stuff (at least to you and me) will have a hard time getting accomplished in our lifetimes.

One thing I would like to see gone immediately is trapping and use of poisons. The problem is that so much of that is poorly executed and greed/unethical behavior seems to dominate more often than not.

  17. gline says:

Mike are you a part of footloose mt?

  18. Mike says:

    gline –

No, but thx to you I just donated and added the link to my blog roll.

  19. gline says:

    Well that was fast!

  20. Jim K says:

I don’t understand the use of poisonous killing devices–which remind me of land mines we use in war. I used to trap as a kid and we used either a drowning set or a conibear. I don’t trap or hunt anymore. I prefer to see animals alive–not dead, stuffed and hanging on a wall.

The government outlawed DDT and other poisonious insecticides but it allows the use of explosive, poisonous devices to kill predators and other “nuisance animals”. This is so stupid. All my family members are avid outdoor enthusiasts (including my 3 year old boy who camped with us in Denali when he was only one). We have hiked and camped in the Grand Canyon, upper and lower Appalacian, the Ozarks, Yellowstone, Glacier, etc., etc., and I can just image my kid stepping on or picking up one of these devices. Check out this link:

It’s time the government outlaws practices that are normally only condoned and practiced in warfare (which is unquestionably an inhumane practice since it’s usually fleeing civilians that get killed or maimed). This is parallel to landmining our national parks. You must admit this is such a dichotomy of values. You can’t buy something to kill the bugs in your garden but you can buy things to stick in our national parks to kill people.
