Michigan: Wild cougar confirmed in U.P.

Written by Mike on November 8th, 2009

I used to spend quite a bit of time in the U.P.

During one trip, I witnessed a cougar crossing Skanee Road in the Huron Mountains at about 1 AM. This was in 1993. Some of the die ahrds woodsmen I knew in the area would tell me about cougars long before that.

I would not be surprised if there has been a small population in Porcupine Mountains State Park and the largely private Huron Mountain area and Mcormick Wilderness. I’m glad to see this rare cat show up on film so the Michigan DNR can no longer lie about its existence. See a previous post on that debacle.

The northwoods just got a little bit wilder this weekend, folks – a little bit mor kick to the wind, and a little bit more intensity on those walks through the woods. The spirit of that great country lives on.
