Earle actually released a Townes Van Zandt cover album this year, called “Townes”. It’s excellent. Van Zandt was one of the finest songwriters ever, and IMHO was instrumental in the formation of alternative country, a miraculous respite form the awful garbage nu-country that plagues the airwaves. Notice how Letterman pauses the introduction to give tribute to Townes. Very cool, and an outstanding performance by Earle. Enjoy below in HD:

Monday, October 26th, 2009Green group calls on Obama admin to stop roadless Tongass logging
Sunday, October 25th, 2009WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Pew Environment Group and 10 other conservation organizations called on Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today to stop two controversial timber sales in roadless areas of Southeast Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, one of the last intact temperate rainforests in the world. The groups asked Vilsack to honor President Barack Obama’s commitment to uphold the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which was issued to protect 58.5 million acres of undeveloped national forests, including the Tongass

Yellowstone wolves fall in rifle sights
Sunday, October 25th, 2009From what I hear, shooting wolves on the northern Yellowstone border is like shooting fish in a barrel.
“She was a genius wolf in her tactics,” said Laurie Lyman, a former San Diego County teacher who has spent the last five years tracking the recovery of the endangered gray wolves that were reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995. “Her strategies were just unbelievable. She knew how to survive anything, but she didn’t know how to survive a man with a gun.”

Wyoming: Hunter being prosecuted for illegal taking of famous grizzly bear
Saturday, October 24th, 2009This was a cub of the famous “bear 399″ which raised its cubs in plain view in Grand Teton National Park.
The bebar was at 40 yards on carcass, and stood up when the poacher approached. It was then shot by the poacher when it got on all fours, but did not approach. The animals was found dead five feet from the carcasss. The poacher initially claimed self defense, but the evidence soon rule that out.
Lets hope they throw the book at this clown and revoke his hunting license for life.
Colorado: Salazar introduces bill designating new wilderness
Saturday, October 24th, 2009This is great news for a beautiful area. The San Juan Mountains are an outstanding range in SW Colorado. Also, I don’t see any kind of sell out in this plan that would trade away thousandsof acres of roadless lands to obtain wilderness.
OMG? You mean that people can actually pass a wilderness bill without hundreds of millions in industry subsidies and sacrificing rare roadless area to appease haters in the process?
Someone put this bill in Tester’s pocket.
Oregon: Remains of man found in Ochoco National Forest
Saturday, October 24th, 2009This was a big story the last year. Definitely an unsolved mystery at this point.
