Arizona: Trash piling up in forests

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I’ve never understood this mentality. We have garbage collection for a reason.

Wildlife biologist who shot Glacier cub is “puzzled” by death

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

What’s so puzzling about it? You shot a distressed animal with a heavy drug. This isn’t freaking candy.

The last photo of the grizzly sow and her cubs alive can be seen at the link.

Larry Lilly, a hiker in the area who who took the photos on the day of the bear families death, said it best:

We need to be the ones who are more flexible to their needs,” he said. “If that requires shutting down trailheads, that’s just a burden we’re going to have to bear.

Montana: Huge 800 pound grizzly shot and left for dead on Rocky Mountain Front

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

The bear had no history of livestock feeding or running into people. Some guys(or guy) playing with their little toys just shot it and walked away.

Minnesota: Moose continue decline

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

It looks like the NW herd will be gone, but the NE herd may be sticking around for quite some time. Recommendations such as increased white tail hunting in heavy moose areas and no deer feeding in moose areas were proposed.

How about reducing logging? That is what brings in the white tails to begin with.

A sad, tragic chapter for Glacier National Park: Old Man Lake sow killed, but cub is also killed by tranquilizer gun

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Well, we wanted this thing stopped, but Glacier National Park proceeded. One of the Cubs was killed by what appears to be a tranquilizer reaction. This is not candy, folks.

Please call Glacier National Park and let them have some of your feedback to this sad and incompetent series of actions.

Grizzly Bear Killed 300 Yards from Occupied Oldman Lake Campground
One yearling captured; other yearling died during tranquilizing operation

The following is the official park release:

WEST GLACIER, MONT. – True to her nickname, the “Oldman Lake Bear,” the
female grizzly bear that park personnel have been tracking in recent days
and her two yearling cubs were observed Monday afternoon, August 17 about
300 yards away from, and heading towards, the backcountry campground at
Oldman Lake. After descending from Pitamakan Pass, two park rangers armed
with rifles, simultaneously shot and humanely-killed the adult bear at
approximately 4:3- p.m. Monday, Glacier National Park officials report.
Rangers were about to close the backcountry campground when they spotted
the bear family group. Backpackers were in the Oldman Lake campground when
rangers spotted the bear heading that way.

Glacier National Park not listening in “Minority Report” style grizzly kill

Monday, August 17th, 2009

That’s exactly what this proposed grizzly bear killing by NPS reminds me of. This is some sort of weird “Minority Report” management style where we take out a bear before any crime is even committed, as if we can arrogantly predict the future. For those not familiar, “Minority Report” is a Tom Cruise film where psychics could predict the future, and their efforts were focused on predicting crimes before they could even happen. This created a perrfect crime-free society. The soon to be killed 17 year old grizzly sow up near Old Man Lake has never attacked, charged or bit a hiker. Nor has any cub she has ever raised. Yet, she will be killed as soon as she comes down into a less remote drainage.

Since they aren’t listening, contact the Columbia Falls chamber of commerce and let them know what you think about this Minority Report style grizzly bear management in Glacier National Park.

I was planning to visit Glacier this fall/summer, but I will absolutely boycott the park and the economic infrastructure around it if this bear is killed. Contact information is below:

Best government dollar spent – the National Park system

Absolutely.

On top of that, Obama’s recent visit has IMHO done quite a bit for giving a bit more exposure to this world class resource.

Crazed Ted Nugent fired from paper

Monday, August 17th, 2009

The question is how did Nugent get the column to begin with? When you are fired from a right wing newspaper for being to harsh, it’s time to take a deep look in the mirror at just how much crazy sauce is rolling around upstairs.

Nugent has consistently been one of the misinformation leaders in the outdoor community.

another article on the Old Man Lake sow grizzly

She will be killed soon if you do not call GNP and protest their plans. This bear has never charged or attacked anyone.

There is no best outcome for the Old Man Lake female, however.

A GPS signal puts the old grizzly over the ridge right now, in a remote corner of the park to the west. But she’ll be back. She always comes back.

This time, however, will be her last
