I can already see it. Readers asking themselves, “The Wilderness Sportsman is blaming human error again on an attack?”. The answer is once again, “yes”.
Let me explain. According to the story, a group of people drove up into some wild country on the edge of a ranch. They got off their quads and spread out to 75 yards between each person. Why did they do this? They were looking for elk antlers. There are several things wrong with this:
1. When you are staring at the ground all the time, you aren’t properly behaving in grizzly country.
2. The wide distance between each person effectively created a “net”, which may have forced the bear to react the way it did.
3. Intent on staring at the ground and widely spaced, they were probably very quiet. Note how the victim describes that the grizz was “immediately in my face”. That is probably because he wasn’t paying attention. He probably walked right into the grizzly bear.
Human error once again, and a mother grizz killed, with three cubs being sent to a zoo. It’s a shame this man was not educated in the use of bear spray.
