Bull elk hanging out in a river

Monday, April 27th, 2009
elk-western.jpg

This bull elk image was taken in western Montana, at a location I won’t reveal at this time ;) It was  late September and the rut was on. The female elk (also referred to as “cows”) seemed to be using the river as a place to get away from the relentless bulls. I saw a group of eight cows and calves just hanging out on this particular river bend. Some of the calves were sleeping in thickets along the shore.

Last fall was my first visit to this location and there’s no doubt that if I get back to western Montana in the summer, I will be  returning. The wildlife watching was simply outstanding.  Western Montana seems to be a real hidden gem for wildlife while most people race down to Yellowstone.

The image was taken with a Canon 40D camera body, Canon 300 F4 L IS lens with Canon 1.4x II teleconverter. A monopod was used as the light was getting low.  1/640th at F9, ISO 400. Please click for the proper view.

Obama admin to give $280 million to wildlife refuges, fisheries

Monday, April 27th, 2009

What would Bush and Cheney have been doing right now? Nothing.

Absolutely nothing. They’d be sitting back on their hands, watching the country sink just like they always did. Their incompetence did tremendous damage to this country, and it’s still going to be quite some time before we get it back on track.

It feels great to have a few progressive minds making some well intentioned moves these days. What a relief from the last eight years.

An amazingly lengthy article which discusses NREPA and Carole King. Well worth reading.

Will NREPA finally pass? Let’s hope so.

What they don’t realize is that 90% of the lower 48 is already roaded, motorized and trailed. If they want to use motors, they can walk right out their front door and enjoy everything that anyone who likes motors could ever want. Sadly, these people also want the last rare pieces of land that don’t allow motors. This behaviour is basically created by a real lack of self awareness on an individual basis.

Colorado: Girl runs screaming from bear, bear is put down (video)

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I call B.S. on this one. First, if the bear wanted to catch her, it easily could have. Bears are naturally curious animals. I think there’s a very big line between a curious animal and an actual attack. This is just lazy work by the wildllife officials. An obvious case of relocation.

“I was crossing under the highway and there was a rustling in the stream and I looked back and there was a bear two feet behind me,” Swendsen said. “I didn’t know what to do so I kept walking and it started following me. And then I started running because I was freaked out, I didn’t know what to do. And it started chasing me and so I started screaming.”

Park Service Protests Big Solar Expansion in Nevada Desert
National Parks Will Suffer from Water Withdrawals, Pollution and Habitat Loss

Washington, DC — The National Park Service is sounding an alarm about plans for scores of big solar power plants in Southern Nevada, according to an inter-agency memo posted today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). NPS predicts harm to national parks in the region due to water scarcity, habitat disturbance, air pollution, sound pollution and light pollution lightening night skies.
