Interior Department officials ignored key scientific findings when they limited water flows in the Grand Canyon to optimize generation of electric power there, risking damage to the ecology of the spectacular national landmark, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.

Donna Metcalf passes on

Those of you who ever stepped foot in the Lee Metcalf wilderness area of Montana may recognize the name.

Mrs. Metcalf devoted considerable time over the years to the preservation of Montana’s remaining wild places as wilderness. She founded and chaired the Forever Wild Endowment and served on the Board of the Northern Rockies Action Group. She was a lifelong member of the Wilderness Society.

Ohio: PBS works to preserve stories of national park

The program will be broadcast this fall in conjunction with a 10-hour series about the national parks called America’s Best Idea: Our National Parks, by filmmaker Ken Burns. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park won’t be prominently featured in the series, so Western Reserve Public Media decided to produce a local documentary highlighting the park’s importance to Northeast Ohio.

South Dakota: Obama halts power plant

The EPA objection is over an air quality permit issued last November by the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment. At the time Big Stone II officials called the approval “a major step forward” for the plant. Now the EPA’s Denver office is questioning whether the South Dakota air permit is adequate.

Montana: Glacier National Park superintendent wants official wilderness designation

Now, Glacier National Park’s Superintendent, Chas Cartwright, wants to get the public interested in officially designating the park as a wilderness. Cartwright said more than 30 years has been a long time to wait.
