The fire is burning about six miles east of Yellowstone, or 40-miles west of Cody, and 90-miles south of Billings. It has burned over 32-thousand-500 (32,590) acres, about 51 square miles, in the Shoshone National Forest.

The estimate released Thursday is based on aerial surveys. It will be used to guide management strategies under the Interagency Bison Management Plan, an agreement approved in 2000 that governs the handling of bison that leave Yellowstone and enter Montana.
