Illinois: Cougar sighted in North Chicago suburbs

Could this be the wild cougar recently spotted in southern Wisconsin? Or is this a released pet? Either way, it came to the wrong end of town. Illinois is a dead end for rare wildlife.

NORTH CHICAGO — Despite another sighting called in to police, no cougar was bagged as of Sunday evening by officials who have been receiving eyewitness reports of a big cat since Friday morning.

Those included one from a police officer who nearly struck it with his squad car.

The Flathead Basin Commission has asked Montana Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester to find a way to compensate and retire all pending oil and gas leases in the Flathead National Forest.

Following an environmental analysis last year, Park Service Regional Director Mike Snyder in Denver ruled that his agency would stop using howitzers and other means to trigger avalanches to make Sylvan Pass safe after the winter of 2007-2008.
