The incident that led to the charges occurred on October 3, 2007 on Prince of Wales Island, when two vehicles were observed by a Forest Service law enforcement officer leaving a closed Forest road that was gated and locked. The lock to the gate appeared to have been shot off, according to law enforcement officials for the Forest.

Officials with the George Washington National Forest are not naming the company involved because they say this plan is just in its infancy. The turbines, 131 of them, could stretch across a large area of the forest near where Hardy County, West Virginia and Shenandoah and Rockingham counties in Virginia meet.

Driving through the forest on a pleasant afternoon, people can encounter a number of natural wonders; towering Douglas fir and majestic cedar, spruce and hemlock; clear streams cascading down lush green slopes; and elk, deer and other wildlife. Unfortunately, a not-so-natural sight may also be encountered, and that’s one of a number of trash dumps lining or even blocking some forest roads.
