Combined, that amounts to a record 1,098 bison killed this winter, out of an estimated 4,700 bison in the park before the season began.

“Certainly it is a big number,” said Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash.

Parks develop plan to keep virus out of Lake Superior.

Montana: Forest districts study off-road vehicle rules

The Forest Service also is adopting an enforcement approach similar to those applied to hunting and fishing laws: It’s the users’ responsibility to know where they can and can’t go.

“We don’t have to sign these routes on the ground,” DeHerrera said, adding that a forest travel map will be “the legal instrument indicating where motorized access is allowed.”

Arizona: Meetings planned for proposed copper mine.

Oregon:County finishes road plan for Wallowa-Whitman National Forest

After an estimated 4,000 volunteer hours and an inventory of 473 Maintenance Level 1 roads in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest over more than six months, Baker County’s Travel Management alternative is now in the hands of the Forest Service team that’s compiling alternatives for Forest Supervisor Steve Ellis.
