  1. Gorgeous shot. I’ve fished the first meadow of Slough Creek and the canyon of Pebble Creek (and wrote about that little stream’s significance in my life in my recent chapbook, please forgive the “spam”) and I’ve always wondered what Pebble’s meadows are like. Slough’s were one of the great paradise of my life thus far, and I figured Pebble might be alike. Apparently it is. Gotta get there someday, hopefully soon.

  2. Thx for the link, Dharma bum. Your book looks very interesting.

Pebble is pretty amazing. Really great trout habitat. It really is a beautiful meadow. But what’s neat about it is the fact it’s also another river’s meadow, the Lamar. If you click on the image to make it full size, you will see a river cut right below the edge of the forest at the bottom of the mountain. That’s the Lamar.

As for Slough, it’s simply outstanding. If you like to flyfish for inland trout, there isn’t a finer area in the world.

  3. Mike - ah ha… see I thought that this was above the Pebble Creek canyon, I never explored the stream downstream from the campground, though I know that area is of particular beauty. Have you ever been into Pebble’s upstream meadows?

Anyway, thanks for the beautiful image. Very striking.

  4. Dharma - My mistake on that one. The picture is Soda Butte Creek. I stay at Pebble Creek campground, which is right by that area so I often get them confused.

I have definitely fished the Pebble Creek Canyon, but have not gone up to the meadows yet. I hear it’s really nice though. Some thick grizz country there. I asked a ranger a couple years back which campground has the most grizz activity, and he immediately told me “Pebble Creek”. I figured it was Slough from all the reports.

In the fall of 2006, I had this area largely to myself. The weather was definitely not ideal (snow, sleet, 30’s), but it was beautiful. I fished large portions of lower Slough and Soda Butte without another fisherman. They are all amazing fisheries.

  5. Mike - cool, thanks for the clarification. It’s a beautiful shot no matter what. Pebble Creek is my favorite campground in Yellowstone. Love the camping, the canyon, the Lamar Valley and all that. It’s funny that basically the one piece in my book that wasn’t reprinted from my blog is about Pebble Creek. Anyway, as far as grizzlies go, I can only say that the hosts at the Pebble Creek campground were as fervent as I’ve seen about not having any food or anything out of the bear lockers unless it was immediately being used that very moment.

One of these days I want to take a hike up into those Pebble Creek meadows… curious what it’s like up there.

    All the best.
