Idaho: Poll shows Idahoans want roadless areas protected

The scientific survey completed in early January shows that by a 3-to-1 margin, Idaho voters say those lands should be protected from industrial development. The poll also shows that by a 2-1 margin, Idahoans oppose Bush Administration proposals that critics say would potentially expose Idaho’s national forest roadless areas to development like building roads and phosphate mining.

“I was insulted as a high school student prepared to enter the world I need to hear both sides of the story,” the student, Kip Barhaugh, 17, said in an interview Tuesday. “I don’t feel there is another side. Global warming is not a controversial issue, it’s a fact. We need to be prepared to deal with it.”

Imagine a Boundary Waters lake surrounded in the autumn by lush red maple, and golden oak. That’s not a bad forest, but it’s different than what we see in one of today’s key tourist destinations. And, it will support a whole different set of other plants and forest animals than today.

With sprawl and development occurring at a near record clip, we are losing open space at a rate approaching 10,000 acres per day. Remote sensing studies by the Forest Service Southern Research Station report that in the conterminous U.S., only 3 percent of the nation’s land is farther than 17,000 feet from the nearest road.

Barton testified in state district court in Lake County Tuesday that he was in a group that terrorized campers on Basswood Lake on Aug. 7. He admitted drinking beer and firing his gun on Newton Lake but said he didn’t join the group when they threatened campers on Basswood Lake.
