First federal ranger survey concerning ORV problems on BLM and USFS land

I was happy to receive this information today from PEER on the ORV survey amongst federal rangers. The results speak for themselves.

On Tuesday, a group of federal rangers released a first-of-its-kind survey about BLM and USFS ranger experiences with illegal, off-road ORV activity . The results, I think, were quite interesting.

Specifically:

(1) Over 9 in 10 rangers agreed that illegal atv use is a “major law enforcement issue in [their] jurisdiction[s]”
(2) Over 50% believe that the problem is “out of control”, and
(3) About 2/3 believe that the penalties we have now are “not tough enough.”

“The rangers are all saying the same thing – there’s no meaningful response to the reckless use of off-road
vehicles,” added Daniel Patterson, Southwest Director for Public Employees for Environmental
Responsibility (PEER), who coordinated the survey. “Congress needs to get a handle on this problem
before it spins further out of control.”
