Washington: Hard rains hurt park, salmon runs

While the Deschutes is a big attraction right now, the floods and heavy rain wreaked more damage on Olympic National Park, hammered salmon eggs in rivers and shut down ski resorts all over the state.

Tim Stevens, spokesman for the National Parks Conservation Association, said Tuesday that the Park Service bowed to political pressure last month when it announced last month it would allow Sylvan Pass to remain open. And he said the planned government meetings threaten to leave the public out of the crucial planning process for the park.

I realize I grew up in another generation, another world for that matter. I’m sure that if I had been able to play video games, surf the internet or had 500 television channels to watch, I would have taken advantage of those things. On the other hand, I wouldn’t trade the memories of all those countless hours that me and my friends spent exploring the woods and creating our own adventures.

Great Falls archer Mike Love says he finds few elk where he has hunted in the Little Belts for more than 35 years and he blames excessive cattle grazing and the Forest Service for allowing it.

Utah: Forest Service tabs 24 rivers for wild and scenic designations

In a move that would launch the Beehive State into the national mainstream, the U.S. Forest Service has deemed 24 river and stream segments totaling 212 miles suitable for the federal designation that would provide extra layers of protection to special waterways.
