Missouri: Local paper prints misinformation about proposed wilderness

All wilderness areas allow hunting and fishing, and most allow horseback riding.

The land is used for hunting and fishing, horseback riding and other appropriate outdoors uses.

Some of those uses would be restricted under a wilderness designation.

Nada Culver, senior counsel with the Wilderness Society in Denver – and a taxpayer – represents one of many conservation organizations seeking more time for comment. She, too, hopes the BLM “can make decisions as free of politics as possible.”
But Culver also worries that what she calls a hurried process devalues people’s emotional response to the landscape.

The U.S. Forest Service plans to close selected recreational sites on districts in Calaveras and Tuolumne counties, charge user fees at others where the fees were not charged before, and increase fees in some others.

Idaho: Clearwater National Forest travel plan

Planning Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Clearwater National Forest (CNF). The proposed action would designate a site-specific transportation system and prohibit indiscriminate cross-country traffic. The EIS will analyze the effects of the proposed action and alternatives. The Clearwater National Forest invites comments and suggestions on the issues to be addressed. The agency gives notice of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) analysis and decision-making process on the proposal so interested and affected members of the public may participate and contribute to the final decision.

County commissioners initially favored a National Park Service takeover of the monument, in light of the cash-strapped Forest Service’s recent decision to permanently close the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center after 14 years. Commissioners withdrew that support, however, after hearing from recreational groups concerned about access.
