The manufacture and sale of off-road vehicles is tremendously profitable, and the industry has been spending freely to oppose any effort to control the use of their machines on public lands in the West. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance has collected scores of first-person horror stories about public places savaged by the machines in that state. It’s happening here. Drive out to the end of Quesenbury Road to the BLM land and look at the ATV tracks gouged in the fragile desert. The BLM posts signs there warning off-road vehicles NOT to carve new roads there. The ATV people pull them down.

Utah: Three hikers plucked from cliff in wilderness rescue
The three friends finally found themselves in an area where they could proceed neither up or down, so they scaled a 50-foot cliff for safety from potential flash floods on Saturday and began waiting for help.

West Virginia: Search continues for autistic hiker in Dolly Sods Wilderness
More than 100 volunteers came out to the Dolly Sods Wilderness area to help search for an autistic hiker who has been missing since Sunday afternoon.
Command Center spokesman Chris Stadelman says the large number of volunteers will allow today’s efforts to be in the form of a grid search, where the searchers line up in sight of the next person in line.

Montana: Cougar hunt planned in Rattlesnake
In an effort to reduce encounters between lions and people, a limited lion hunt will be allowed again this winter in the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area.
The big cats have never attacked a human in the Rattlesnake, but regular sightings in recent years have prompted a limited hunt to try to keep it that way.
