Idaho:Uneducated guide, hunter kill large Selway/Bitterroot grizzly - first confirmed sighting in 60 years

One thing to consider is this bear was baited. This is where hunters (if you want to call baiting hunting - many don’t, including myself) set up garbage cans filled with crushed ice cream cones or other odorous food over a long period of time to get bears to visit regularly. There is no excuse for kiling an endangered grizzly bear while it eats over your bait pile. None. This incident also happened in a roadless area. It’s nice to know that peope can setup garbage cans and fill them with slop in what is supposed to be a wild area.

There hasn’t been a confirmed sighting of a grizzly in this area since 1946.It’s one of the wildest ecosystems in the lower 48. A very rare bear indeed, of about 400-500 pounds. What a shame.

The bear, a member of a threatened species, was killed Monday by a hunter near Kelly Creek about three miles from the Montana border, said Steve Nadeau, statewide large carnivore manager for the Idaho fish and game department.

He said the killing of the grizzly could be a setback for grizzlies returning to the area, which is considered prime habitat for the species.

“It’s the first verified animal in 60 years, and it’s no longer there,” he said.
