As predicable as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west, some people are again using wildfire season as an excuse for more logging and road-building in our national forests.

And just like attempts in years past, such claims ignore the fact that many of the most significant fires threatening homes and communities are burning through heavily logged and roaded landscapes and even grasslands.

Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road is closing down early this year and officials say it’s because of last November’s storm damage which took out entire sections of the historic highway.

The lightning-caused Corporal Fire was first spotted on Aug. 12 from the Spotted Bear Lookout, which is now wrapped in fire-resistant material as the fire has grown to 4,454 acres, presenting a threat to that structure and others.

Hunting, camping, hiking, fishing and other similar activities, are allowed in the Wilderness, which can be accessed on foot or by horseback.

Motor vehicles and other mechanized transportation, including mountain bikes and wheeled deer carts, are not allowed.
