Activists worry about power lines in parks

It is not just Gettysburg that worries them as a result of a 2005 law that gave federal regulators new authority over where power lines are built. They fear the law could place hundreds of national and state parks and other protected sites in the Northeast and Southwest, including West Virginia, in or near the path of massive power lines.

Fire offiicals often talk about their hopes for a “season-ending” event—meaning enough moisture and cool enough weather to naturally calm the fires—and that usually comes around Labor Day, de Golia said.

“Labor day is quite a ways off,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough fire season in this part of the world.”

“We’re expecting additional fires coming from the lightning, but they are able to hit the fires pretty hard right now, and they expect to get pretty good containment on 80 percent,” said Paul Norman, spokesman for the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. “Our highest priority is initial attack, just because if you can stop them small, it saves you the effort down the road.”
