Montana: Don’t destroy Lost Horse Canyon for “road mix”
For 10 years, the Forest Service will gate the road and reduce access to the canyon while they blast, crush and haul gravel away. I can’t imagine that “road mix” is only attainable to Ravalli County by demolishing one of the Bitterroot’s finer canyons. The public comment period ends July 9, and it is imperative that all hunters, boaters, climbers and hikers let them know that we won’t give up our land without a fight.
Rangers call off-road vehicles biggest threat to public lands
Tucson, AZ — Reckless off-roading has become an acute law enforcement problem and is now the single greatest threat to American landscapes, according to a new coalition of rangers and public land managers assembled by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). Rangers say tough new policies, such as suspending hunting and fishing licenses and, in extreme cases, confiscating vehicles, are needed to stem irresponsible off-road vehicle use.

The counties “tried to overturn all the protections limiting . . . off-highway vehicle travel [in the monument] based on unsupported allegations without proof there were a bunch of highways out there, somewhere,” Earthjustice attorney Ted Zukoski said Monday. “The judge said they have to prove each and every road.”

Montana: Madison Arm fire 90% contained
Madison Arm Resort guests and Lakeshore area residents were allowed into the area Sunday night, but were asked to present identification at a check point. The area was to open to the general public Monday afternoon.
California: Heat wave sparks forest restrictions
Fireworks are banned, and campfires only will be permitted in certain campgrounds until fire season ends this fall, according to forest service personnel. Also, smoking is limited to vehicles, buildings or a 3-foot cleared area.
