That $120 billion they spent is roughly equal to Americans’ total spending at all spectator sports, casinos, movies, golf courses and country clubs, amusement parks and arcades combined, according to a USFWS news release that accompanied the report

For hikers meeting trail crews digging drains rather than installing bridges, the priorities may appear baffling. Bridges required for safe water crossings are the park’s foremost priority, but Jacobs said that “some bridges are eye candy,” providing convenience, but not safety.

Tim LaMarr, BLM plan project manager in Butte, said it sounds like the agency plans to close a lot of trails, but he said many are “user-created” and often are near existing, designated trails.

Congress is considering a new $65 million program to decommission roads the Forest Service either doesn’t want or didn’t authorized. The “Legacy Roads and Trails Remediation Initiative” under consideration by the House would set aside funding for road decommissioning, road and trail repair and maintenance, and the removal of fish barriers.

AP) DENVER The U.S. Forest Service said Wednesday it may have to limit target practice along the Front Range because of a growing problem trying to balance the rights of shooters with hikers, bikers and others who want to use national forests.

Poll: Bush the least popular president since Nixon

In the new poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday nights, President Bush’s approval rating has reached a record low. Only 26 percent of Americans, just over one in four, approve of the job the 43rd president is doing; while, a record 65 percent disapprove, including nearly a third of Republicans.
