Giants of the Yellowstone ecosystem

The Grand Tetons stand proudly over the wild Yellowstone ecosystem. While these peaks are stunning, it’s the various roadless lands in the ecosystem that combine with the “rock and ice” to create a truly diverse landscape loaded with big game and rare animals. The recent rulings in favor of the Roadless Rule are reason to celebrate.

Snow removal is nearing completion on the alpine section of the road and crews also are finishing up the traditional road preparation work, he said. In some areas, one-lane traffic is not an option because crews need both lanes for repair work, Holm said.

FOR some reason - pressure from the recreational industry? - the Bush Administration is again proposing to open the gates at Yellowstone National Park to a nearly three-fold increase in snowmobile use. Years of public, scientific, and environmental opposition to the idea apparently don’t count

“We, frankly, last year were in a better situation regarding moisture than most of the surrounding lands,” Nash said. “Now that situation has reversed itself. We’re drier than we were last year. The drought monitor and other indicators say that the lands surrounding the park are in a better situation than we are.”

The initial funding will support trail restoration in Yellowstone National Park and “cause-related” marketing programs through the National Park Foundation. Later in 2007, Coca-Cola North America will report details about park project funding as part of the National Park Service’s upcoming 100th anniversary.
