If the crowds are any indication, the Alpine Lakes Wilderness has got to be tops on many hikers’ lists. Located just east of Seattle, it straddles the Cascade Crest in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest. Created in 1976 by Congress in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Act, it encompasses about 394,000 acres accessed by 47 trailheads and 615 miles of trail!

HELENA, Mont. — Montana’s congressional delegation has yet to endorse Gov. Brian Schweitzer’s plan to create a brucellosis “buffer zone” around Yellowstone National Park, even as livestock officials struggle to push a renegade group of bison back into the park.

New Mexico: Lincoln National Forest campgrounds open

ALAMOGORDO — The Lincoln National Forest recreation summer season began this past Memorial Day weekend with campgrounds open for public use. Lincoln National Forest Supervisor, Lou Woltering, reminds visitors and recreationists that even though there are currently no fire restrictions in place, everyone must continue to be vigilant when creating a campfire.

Utah: Cache County is fighting with USFS over road claims

The county council has passed two resolutions in six months declaring it owns 197 miles of roads in the national forest and it intends to claim another 150 miles of road in the future. The county wants to own the roads so it can maintain them.
