Fluvial Grayling denied species protection

Fluvial grayling are an incredibly endangered species. Their last stronghold in the lower 48 is the cold, clean water of Montana.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced the withdrawal of the fluvial Arctic grayling of the upper Missouri River from the list of species being considered for protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Service has determined that listing this population of Arctic grayling at this time is not warranted because it does not constitute a distinct population segment as defined by the ESA

Montana: Rice stands with state in opposing mine

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stands with Montana in opposing a coal mine planned for southeastern British Columbia, and will ask Canada to put the proposal through a wide-ranging federal review, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said Tuesday.

Oregon: Winter hammered Mt. Hood National Forest

Damage on the Mt, Hood National Forest from November floods will not be repaired in time for the start of the summer recreation season, U.S. Forest Service officials said Wednesday.

That means restricting access to four campgrounds and some of the most popular trails. After the November floods, wind storms in December caused blowdowns on roads and trails.
