CHICAGO — While the weekend’s icy and snowy weather forced many delays and cancellations, it was something other than snow running across the runways at O’Hare International Airport that caused big problems for pilots trying to land airplanes.

Unlike Old Faithful, the Steamboat geyser erupts irregularly, with its last major eruption coming in 2005. After a quiet period that lasted from 1991 to May 2000, the geyser has had seven major eruptions in as many years.

They claim to be “flying in” and that no new roads would be built. You have to wonder if this will be occurring in roadless land that is now afforded some protection by the roadless rule. In fact, this area you are looking at in the above photo is the same area mentioned in this drilling plan, so it’s likely it will occur in roadless areas.

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking public comment on the drilling proposal. The agency would require that drilling take place well away from streams, and that crews follow all food-storage and garbage-handling rules to avoid problems with grizzly bears.
