Montana: Gallatin County protesting Gallatin National Forest travel plan

BOZEMAN - Gallatin County commissioners are asking the U.S. Forest Service to reopen public comment on the travel plan for the Gallatin National Forest, saying it goes too far in regulating motor vehicle use.

Commissioners voted Wednesday to send a letter of protest to the Forest Service over its plan. Commissioners said an earlier draft of the plan differed significantly from the final plan put forward and that public input on the changes was inadequate.

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has finished a survey of the population of endangered Mexican gray wolves in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona.

The rules are aimed at reducing emissions of heat-trapping gases linked to global warming. While there are almost no coal-fired plants in California, about 20 percent of the state’s electricity comes from coal plants in other Western states.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has proposed building more dams and expanding existing ones to keep more water from the Snake River in Idaho and recharge the dwindling Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer.

Montana: Park bird counts note hawk owl

Glacier National Park’s annual Christmas bird count last month came up with species first for the Park: A northern hawk owl.

The owls, which usually live in the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska, have been found in the Park the past couple of years, with nesting pairs found up the North Fork in some of the burned forests.
