The latest reincarnation of the “preferred alternative” for managing recreation use at the popular lake 20 miles east of Oakridge also would make it illegal for float planes to land on the lake’s surface. The use of generators and chain saws within a portion of the shoreline designated as “semiprimitive” would likewise be banned.

Polar bears on thin ice

Jan. 8, 2006 issue - An adult polar bear needs, on average, four to five pounds of seal blubber a day to survive, and it earns every ounce of it: crouching for hours in the Arctic cold alongside an opening in the ice, waiting for a seal to surface for a breath.

In early November, U.S. Judge Donald Molloy ruled in favor of the Park Service, in short saying that John (Jack) McFarland’s property rights have not been violated by a Park Service decision that requires him to ski, snowshoe or ride a horse to his land wholly inside Glacier in the winter.

Wyoming: Wild horse roundup begins

GREEN RIVER — Federal land managers began a massive winter roundup Friday to reduce two overpopulated wild horse herds that roam eastern Sweetwater County in southwest Wyoming.

Utah: Moose wake up in Utah, sleep in Colorado

Several were stalked by helicopter Friday in northern Utah, captured with a net, blindfolded and then airlifted to trailers for a six-hour drive.

The moose woke up in Utah, but they’ll be going to bed in Colorado.

The largest of loons, the yellow-bill summers in the Canadian Arctic and typically winters along the Pacific Coast. It measures 35 inches long on average, with a wingspan of 49 inches. Its distinguishing feature is a large, pale bill.
