According to this report, the Bush administration will be listing the polar bear as threatened due to the melting ice in the Arctic. This is an absolutely stunning turn of events, opening the door for serious limits to carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. Astonishingly, the Endangered Species Act could end up protecting the human race from climate change, not just polar bears.

Among hunting organizations, the Boone and Crockett Club condemns “the pursuit and killing of any big game animal kept in or released from captivity to be killed in an artificial or bogus `hunting’ situation.” Safari Club approves of canned hunts, as they are called, but frowns on hunting farms that guarantee a kill, saying that violates the principle of “fair chase” — that is, a hunt in which the animal being pursued has a sporting chance to escape.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) — Using fire scars on nearly 5,000 tree stumps dating back 450 years, scientists have found that extended periods of major wildfires in the West occurred when the North Atlantic Ocean was going through periodic warming.

PRAIRIE CITY, Iowa - A new herd of bison, recent arrivals from the National Bison Range in Montana, are roaming the range at the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge, east of Des Moines.

A 1.3-mile trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been closed because of erosion and potential mudslides, the National Park Service announced Tuesday.
