Hunters and anglers are adding their voices to the chorus of those asking Gov. John Huntsman to reevaluate his development plans for roadless Utah. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership along with Trout Unlimited released a study showing an indisputable link between successful recreational hunting and fishing and the abundance of “undisturbed” backcountry.

“Today’s new rule is part and parcel of the Bush Administration’s long-running agenda to take the ‘public’ out of public lands, and hand our national forests over to big energy and timber interests.

“For the first time since modern forest planning began more than 25 years ago, the Forest Service is seeking to exclude the long-term management plans that govern each national forest from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). This new rule is an attempt to hide the administration’s plans for our forests from the public scrutiny required under NEPA.

MISSOULA, Mont. — The federal government broke the law by not addressing flaws in a study it relied on in allowing maintenance of roads in grizzly bear habitat in parts of Montana, Idaho and Washington, a judge ruled Wednesday.

MISSOULA - A Florence man pleaded guilty to nine counts of arson Wednesday for setting numerous wildfires in Western Montana this summer, including the Gash Creek fire, which burned nearly 8,500 acres and cost $8 million to fight.
