Cooler temperatures Monday gave firefighters a leg up on a wildfire that flared up this weekend near Emigrant, destroying three homes, officials said.

The Big Creek fire sparked at 3 p.m. Saturday about five miles southwest of Emigrant, and whipped up to nearly 12,000 acres by Monday night, said Erin Fryer, a fire information officer.
