Firefighting crews have the Cavity Lake Fire 35 percent contained, so fire managers announced Monday they are reopening some portages and lakes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

“Scuttled? No way!” said John Wohlwend of Lakeland, when asked about his coming trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where more than 44 square miles of woods had burned by Friday night. “Of course, our entry point is on fire, but we’re just going to work around it.”

CLEVELAND NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. — Fire crews caught a break when a fast-growing fire began racing away from homes in this San Diego County forest, though hundreds of firefighters had to be ferried by boat to battle another fire on Santa Catalina Island.

In its upper reaches, the Yellowstone River is all about recreation - namely fly-fishing. From where it rises in Yellowstone National Park until about Columbus, the stream is highly valued by trout anglers - especially in the Paradise Valley south of Livingston.
